Almost all iMac® models use Hard Disk Drive(HDD) for a primary storage unit. The storage unit, also known as a Hard Disk Drive(HDD) is the main and most important part of your device because this is the thing that stores all of your data on the computer like photos, music, videos, etc. It runs unobtrusively in the background you'll never know it's there.3.5 Hard drive, 2.5 Hard Drive, 2.5 SATA SSD, and NVMe SSD

You'll need to install software to regulate it. Also the new drive won't likely work with your iMac's temperature sensor, so your fans will spin wildly as if something is overheating.

I remember them telling me that because you're putting a 2.5" drive in the spot of a 3.5" drive. The new drive DID need a mounting bracket of some sort though. I figure I easily got another 3-5 years out of it. My Core2Duo iMac runs like you wouldn't believe now. I went with a Samsung SSD (Evo I think, 256GB).

I wound up buying an SSD there as well but could have gotten one cheaper elsewhere like Amazon. If you're fortunate enough to have one near you I'd go there. The best deal I found was at MicroCenter.

So I shopped around for Mac repair centers and such. I was basically more worried about trapping dust in the panel than anything.

I'm no slouch when it comes to PC building and such but the process with the iMac just did not interest me in the slightest. The process to do so yourself is pretty extensive and requires special tools as pointed out by maximumpow. I was literally in the exact same boat as you I neglected to replace my HDD in my 27" iMac (late 2009). Special thanks for the CSS from its creators at /r/Apple: /u/Xapher19, and /u/gouch23!
